Science Behind Chiropractor Techniques for Back Pain

Category : Health

Back Pain

Chiropractic care is an ancient healing method. However, it has only recently regained popularity. While is it considered a complementary medical treatment, when treating back pain chiropractors use techniques that are scientifically-based. Here is some of the science behind chiropractic techniques for relieving back pain.

The Structure of the Spine

Your spine is made of many components which all work together to help your body move. The spinal cord is surrounded by vertebrae which interlock to form an S-shaped curve. Between each of these vertebrae are soft spinal discs that contain nutrients, act as shock absorbers and provide mobility to the spine.

There are three main regions of the spine: cervical, thoracic, and lumbar. Each area is responsible for various functions and provides mobility to different areas of the body. Pain, stiffness, and immobility occur when any of the vertebrae along the spine become injured or misaligned.

Causes of Back Pain

There are many causes of back pain from conditions such as arthritis, spondylosis, sudden trauma, sport injuries to name a few. But, they can generally be categorized into three types of conditions: subluxation, degeneration, and inflammation.

Subluxation, also known as misalignment, occurs when a vertebra moves out of its proper position. Degenerative problems occur when joints and connective tissues become worn either from age, overuse, disease, or other stressors. Inflammation occurs when the body’s natural immune response is overactive after trauma or disease, and this causes swelling and immobility.

Chiropractic Techniques for Back Pain

Chiropractic techniques for back pain involve realigned the spine through manual adjustments as well as other therapies.

Spinal Manipulation

Depending on the source of the back pain, there are several techniques that a chiropractor may use to realign the spine.

Spinal manipulation uses controlled but sudden thrusting force to push or “pop” misaligned vertebrae back into position. The different positions that the chiropractor places the patient into help to direct the force properly.

Spinal Traction

Spinal traction is a technique that is recommended for patients with disc degeneration, herniated discs, or sciatica.

Spinal traction can be performed manually or mechanically with a stretching apparatus to lengthen and decompress the spine, essentially reverse the negative effects of gravity on the spine. This allows the chiropractor to restore the spinal discs to their proper position and function and improve overall spinal health.

Massage Therapy

Tight muscles can form “knots” which can put pressure on nerves or restrict mobility and cause pain. This occurs when the muscles are overstimulated through physical stress, tension or injury.

Massage therapy works to relieve tension in muscles and connective tissue by manually stretching and lengthening the muscle fibers and fascia. There are various techniques used to achieve this according to the nature and severity of the underlying condition.

Cox Technique

The Cox technique is a relatively new method which uses a specially designed sectioned table that allows the chiropractor to administer flexion-distraction (bending the spine inward and outward), decompress the spinal discs and widen the spinal canal for better mobility and reduced pain and tension.

Final Thoughts

Chiropractic care for back pain is a traditional healing philosophy that has a modern science-based foundation. For relief from back pain chiropractors in Waterford MI can help you to find the best treatment for your condition and put you on the path to a pain-free life.

How to Find the Best Arizona Gynecologist for You

Category : Health

If you’re a woman, you know that there are few things more intimate than a gynecologist’s exam room. Your gynecologist, OB-GYN or women’s health specialist screens provide you with the tools used to define huge aspects of your health and wellness. So finding the best Arizona gynecologist for your personal needs is essential.

Today we’re sharing some tips for choosing the right women’s health specialist.

  1. Ask yourself: What do I need? Well-woman exams, which are covered under the Affordable Care Act, may include a Pap test or pelvic and internal examinations. If you are going to attempt to get pregnant in the next five years or so, it’s time to start looking for an Arizona gynecologist right now. You have to think of this person as your women’s health specialist across the lifespan, so get in with OB-GYNs who you know and trust.

If you have specific issues or conditions, discuss your concerns with your gynecologist or OB-GYN, and he or she may send you to a specialist. For example, if you are experiencing urinary incontinence issues, you may be referred to a specialist in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. Each doctor possesses his or her own strengths, so if you’re having a problem, you need to find someone who provides what you need on a regular basis.

If your regular Arizona gynecologist is going to be the primary source for solving your problem, ask a few questions to make sure he or she is the best-suited person for the job. Ask how many of these kinds of surgeries he or she performs in a month and how many of them have been for women with your specific issue. Also, ask if there are ever complications with the procedures, and if so, what they’ve been.

It’s your right to ask these types of questions because you’re looking out for one person, and that’s yourself. You deserve the best care you can get, and it might just be that your gynecologist is the perfect person to handle your specialized concerns.

  1. Conduct your research. Once you’ve defined what type of doctor you need, begin your research. Good old-fashioned word of mouth, through friends, family members and/or coworkers can be quite helpful when searching for your perfect match. Research online to find additional information such as credentials, specialties, years in practice, patient reviews and ratings, and education.
  2. Ensure that you and your Arizona gynecologist share the same values.  If you’re going to the gynecologist looking for contraception options and, upon discussing it at the appointment, discover that your doctor does not believe in birth control, end the visit and continue your search.
  3. Evaluate the bedside manner. While all doctors should be respectful and compassionate, those qualities can be especially important for the professionals who will perform such intimate examinations. Sex, family planning, fears and, your overall health are not topics you want to discuss with someone who seems uninterested, judgmental or in a hurry.

A good doctor will engage in a dialogue – there’s an art to listening, and those who listen well are generally successful in their practice. Your Arizona gynecologist should listen intently, take your questions and concerns seriously and explain the reasons for his or her advice and actions.

If you feel your doctor doesn’t listen or is in a hurry, then he or she isn’t the doctor for you. While credentials, experience, and expertise rank the highest when narrowing your doctor search, once you’re in the office, comfort matters, too. Discomfort is a red flag. There are good doctors out there who want to help and spend time with you, so don’t settle if you’re not getting what you need.

Your Arizona gynecologist plays a big role in your overall health, so follow these tips to choose a good one.  For the best in women’s wellness, call our office today to schedule a consultation.

Could You Be Suffering From Shoulder Arthritis in New Orleans?

Category : Health

What are the symptoms of shoulder arthritis in New Orleans?

Following are the three most common symptoms.

  • Pain: Your shoulder may even hurt when you’re sleeping, and the pain may worsen during or after movement. The pain can be focused in the back or front of the shoulder, depending on which joint is affected.
  • Restricted range of motion: This pertains to difficulty when performing everyday tasks such as brushing your hair or reaching for something.
  • Sounds when moving your shoulder: Your shoulder may develop a clicking, creaking, or snapping sound during movement

What are the causes of shoulder arthritis in New Orleans?

Several different types of arthritis can affect the shoulder.

  • Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage that covers the top of bones to wear down over time and can frequently affect the AC joint.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes your immune system to attack tissue such as cartilage and ligaments and also softens bone.
  • Posttraumatic arthritis is caused by an injury to the shoulder such as a broken bone or torn ligament.

What are the treatment options for shoulder arthritis in New Orleans?

Depending on the type of arthritis you are experiencing and the severity of your symptoms, your orthopedic specialist can treat your symptoms in several different ways. In most cases, shoulder pain can be successfully treated without surgery, but in some cases, it may be required.

The following are some of the most common treatments for shoulder arthritis.

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication: These medications can provide temporary relief from pain and reduce inflammation. An injection of local anesthetic can also help provide relief.
  • Changes to your lifestyle: You may be able to get relief by resting your shoulder or applying moist heat or ice several times a day. Physical therapy that includes exercises designed to enhance your range of motion may also be helpful.
  • Surgery: If non-surgical options aren’t effective in controlling your pain, your doctor may recommend surgery. Surgical options include:
    • Resection arthroplasty treats arthritis of the AC joint by removing a small amount of bone from the end of the collarbone.
    • Arthroscopy is used to treat mild cases of glenohumeral arthritis and allows the surgeon to clean out the inside of the joint.
  • Joint replacement surgery: Several different parts of your shoulder can be replaced by an artificial component if needed:
    • Hemiarthroplasty is used to replace the head of the humerus (the long bone in the upper arm).
    • Total shoulder arthroplasty can replace the head of the humerus as well as the head of the socket joint.
    • Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty reverses the ball and cup, i.e., the metal ball is fixed to the glenoid, and the plastic cup is attached to the top of the humerus.

If you’re experiencing shoulder pain or other symptoms of shoulder arthritis in New Orleans – don’t hesitate – call our office today to schedule a consultation so the condition doesn’t get worse!

Characteristics of a Medical Cart for Healthcare Facilities

Category : Health

The characteristics of the medical carts within a healthcare facility are the culmination of the needs and expectations of the professionals to be utilizing the carts. Medical cart manufacturers will design to the specifications of each department, whether in the reception and wait areas, back-of-house operations and conference rooms, the cafeteria and the highly-traveled areas by visitors, all in addition to the patient interaction.

Creating the Concept

Input for the characteristics and design of the medical cart are derived from all areas of the facility to ensure versatility and function. The manufacturer’s services should include the inquiring of use specifications of each department manager relating to the features, functionality, and aesthetics. The big-picture understanding of a cart’s utility will help drill down to the generalities of size, load capacity, weight, and mobility. These characteristics will be specific to each function of each department. The medical cart manufacturer will be responsible for the design to mirror the uniqueness of the facility.

Objectives of Use

The healthcare and business professionals need to articulate the objectives of use. The representative of a qualified manufacturer will ask the following questions of each department:

  1. What is your definition of the perfect cart?
  2. How do you imagine the cart functioning?

From the responses to these two all-encompassing questions, the design standards of the cart will begin to form. The look, image, and feel of the cart will become apparent, whether “high-tech” or welcoming, will follow. Any requirement for IEC 60601 or FDA testings will become known at this stage of design.

The input relating to any equipment and devices, and the length of time in use, on the cart, will lead to the requirements of the power supply source. The cart will be designed around the equipment, the power source, and the environment; i.e., areas of sterility, public access, office or food. The final characteristic in the technology category is the management of the power cables and whether the cables are to be visible or hidden.

The Human Factor

Another important characteristic that the medical cart manufacturer needs to be made aware of is the cart’s interaction with the user in its function, assembly, and repair. The manufacturer’s representative must know the expectations of, and needs for, writing surfaces and height adjustments. The understanding of the scope of the maintenance and IT staff in charge of the cart’s repair after assembly, as well as the need of any special tools or training, are important factors in the cart’s design. Another important service of the medical cart manufacturer is the demonstration of a prototype at the facility for a test-run to measure functionality and gain insight to any deficiencies or needed upgrades.

The overall features of a medical cart, and the carts within the non-medical departments of the facility need to function as mobile workstations or be evident as the focal point for information, services, and presentations. The new generation of carts, like people, are expected to carry a heavier workload, to accommodate a broad spectrum of hardware and to manage software, all in smaller footprints for easy maneuverability and storage.

The design will not achieve unison with the use and the interaction of people if the medical cart manufacturer did not have, or did not understand, the expectations of each department

How a Chiropractor Treats Scoliosis

Category : Health

Scoliosis is a common condition of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems that is seen in general medical and orthopedic practices. It refers to a lateral curvature of the spine greater than 10 degrees, meaning that the spine and its bones are curved to one side or the other.

Generally, a scoliosis chiropractor is a professional who is well-equipped to assess, manage, and treat scoliosis and its related complications.

Scoliosis is usually present from birth, and typically first noticed during late childhood or early adolescence when the child has a “growth spurt,” and the abnormality in their spine is first noticed.
If you are concerned that your child might have scoliosis, you may want to take them to a professional scoliosis chiropractor to see if this is the case.

Chiropractic Assessment of Scoliosis

The first step in the chiropractic management of scoliosis is assessing the patient to see if they have scoliosis, and if so, the extent to which they suffer from it and its related symptoms.

Your scoliosis chiropractor will look at your back in several positions and may use other instruments as well as copies of a spinal X-ray to see the degree of curvature of the spine.

Depending on the severity of the curvature, scoliosis is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Mild scoliosis features a curvature of less than 25 degrees, severe scoliosis is when the degree of curvature is greater than 40 degrees, and any lateral curvature between 25 and 40 degrees is considered to be moderate scoliosis.

Interventions to treat scoliosis are generally the same, regardless of the degree of curvature of the spine. However, surgical involvement is usually only considered in severe scoliosis.
Even then, it is usually reserved for patients who suffer from considerable pain, difficulties with breathing, or another major disability impacting their quality of life that is directly related to their scoliosis.

The primary method through which a chiropractor treats scoliosis is usually through providing manual manipulation of the bones in the spine. Depending on their assessment, they will gently move the bones in the spine using their hands to reduce areas where the bones are incorrectly aligned.

By adjusting the spinal bones, the chiropractic care of the spine in the scoliosis patient can do a great deal to prevent pain and discomfort and make it easier to move and breathe.
Most people who work as a specialized scoliosis chiropractor have a heavy component of physical therapy within their practice.

They will usually have a heavy focus on strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine and back so that the person is able to support their torso without putting too much pressure on their abnormally curved spine.

4 Ways Massage Therapy Can Help Ameliorate Your Leg Pain

Category : Health

Burning, stabbing, and aching pains in the legs can come on suddenly or develop slowly over time. Cramps, swelling, and soreness are common symptoms associated with this pain. Symptoms can be unique to a specific diagnosis, which might range from tendonitis or joint inflammation to a pulled muscle or sciatica.

Injury, illness, and overuse may lead to your leg pain, but relief is out there. When leg pain makes simple tasks difficult it is time to seek treatment. Massage therapy performed by a chiropractic doctor is a proven method of leg pain treatment in MI. Your chiropractor can use a series of maneuvers and instruments to bring about natural pain relief and healing.

These therapies include deep tissue massage, heat massage, stretching, and trigger point therapy. Each treatment can target specific pain points to relieve pain and promote healing.

Here are five ways massage therapy can help alleviate your leg pain.

1 Reduces Swelling

Chiropractic massage therapy can help with swelling reduction. Swelling due to injury or illness occurs when fluid builds up around the affected area. Massage therapy gently redistributes the fluid, allowing it to drain or be absorbed by the body. When swelling reduces, it can help restore a range of motion as well as decrease discomfort.

Reduction may also help joint inflammation, tendonitis, injury, and sciatica due to swelling in the lower back.

2. Relieves Pressure

When pulled muscles, joint inflammation, or tension in the legs cause a buildup of pressure, it can be difficult to walk or perform regular tasks. Bending at the knees, stretching, or taking a step can be painful or impossible.

Massage therapy releases stress and tension on tight muscles. This stress relief reduces pressure throughout the legs, including pressure on pinched nerves and swollen joints. Relieving this pressure decreases pain and allows freer use of the leg.

3. Increases Circulation

Massage therapy promotes better circulation in the legs. Increased circulation can restore feeling to legs and feet that are numb due to neuropathy. It also helps reduce swelling.

Healthy blood flow distributes healing nutrients throughout the body. These nutrients speed up healing and decrease pain.

4. Reduces Pain

The healing properties of massage include the release of chemicals called endorphins. These natural pain fighters offer temporary relief from pain and discomfort by reducing the brain’s perception of pain. While the pain relief doesn’t last long term, this powerful release from discomfort can accelerate the healing process.

When tension, neuropathy, pain, and tightness in the legs hinder your quality of life, it is important to seek out a treatment option that leads to recovery. Chiropractic massage therapy in Michigan is an excellent way to find relief without the use of drugs or surgery, which can be dangerous, addictive, or ineffective. Working with a trained chiropractor dedicated to helping patients find wellness can open the door to relief for acute or chronic leg pain.

What Can Iodine Supplements Do for Me?

Category : Health

Few people give much thought to how important iodine is to their health. Iodine plays a significant role regulating your hormone system. You’ve heard people blame weight gain on thyroid problems. If you are struggling to lose weight, it could be you don’t have enough iodine. Iodine is important to a properly functioning thyroid gland. An under or inactive thyroid leads to weight gain, severe fatigue, colder hands and feet, as well as other health problems.

Iodine Increases Testosterone

Even fewer men understand the impact low iodine has on testosterone levels. An iodine deficiency results in increased estrogen production. Iodine inhibits aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. This means more estrogen and less testosterone in men. An iodine supplement is very often necessary to reduce estrogen conversion to retain testosterone that the male body naturally produces.

Iodine also releases bromine and heavy metals from your tissues. Bromide is a known sex drive suppressant. In the past, bromide was given to prisoners for this reason.

We simply do not get enough iodine in our diets.

Not Enough Iodine

People used to get plenty of iodine but changes in our foods and environment have stripped us of iodine sources. In the 1970s, the food industry moved away from iodine-based yeast stabilizers to a bromine-based stabilizer. Not a good thing for men (or women). Additionally, fluoride (in our water supplies) binds to the same receptor in your thyroid as iodine does. The fluoride interferes with your thyroid function and lowers the amount of iodine your thyroid releases to your body and effectively causing men to have low testosterone levels.

Bromine is important because bromine causes the body to defecate iodine and replace it with bromine. Your thyroid hormone needs iodine, not bromine. Bromides are in medicines and cosmetics. It’s lurking in consumer products such as furniture, clothing, mattresses, baby furniture, and computers. Nonorganic potatoes contain bromine. Bromine is in popular drinks such as sodas and Gatorade. Bromides also come in nonorganic peanut butter and some deli meats. Many foods contain brominated flour and brominated vegetable oil (labeled as BVO).

All of this points to the need for an iodine supplement.

The Best Iodine Supplements

Several studies find that daily iodine intake is healthy in the range of 7 mg for men (some studies recommend 12.5 mg) and 13 mg for women. Women need more iodine for other reasons. It doesn’t limit estrogen in women because they produce their own estrogen instead of converting it from testosterone using the enzyme aromatase.

The best iodine supplements contain other healthy nutrients and vitamins such as vitamin d-3 along with iodine and iodide. Iodine supplements do much more than increase testosterone. Iodine also increases hormonal sensitivity of the brain and all body tissues. Iodine acts as an anti-oxidant, is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and controls your body’s cortisol response during stress. For these reasons and other sexual and health reasons, be sure you’re getting enough iodine.

Treating Ocular Allergies

Treating Ocular Allergies

Category : Health

Ocular allergies or eye allergies usually occur when your eye conjunctiva comes in contact with something you are allergic to. As a result, your immune system responds by sending antibodies which cause allergic reactions in the form of itchy, red, swollen and watery eyes.

Allergies always tend to worsen during certain seasons when pollen and mold accumulate outside. Ocular allergies pose no threat to your vision other than effects like temporary blurriness and discomfort, but if they are persistent, you should see an ophthalmologist for ocular allergy treatment as continued discomfort could result in bacterial infection risk. You should also schedule ocular allergy testing to rule out other infections that come with the same symptoms but can be a threat to your eyesight.

Ocular allergy testing

If your symptoms are persistent, ocular allergy testing can eliminate the possibility of serious infections that could be a threat to your vision. Your ophthalmologist will perform an allergic test on you to evaluate environmental allergies and rule out other more serious infections. These tests will help your doctor determine the exact cause of your allergic reactions and help him to prescribe appropriate treatment for you.

If you have persistent ocular allergies, make sure to visit your ophthalmologist and let him give you the best and most effective ocular allergy treatment for your condition.

Ocular allergy treatment

Ocular allergies have become a very common condition affecting at least 20% of the American population. Some ocular allergy treatments could help relieve the symptoms, and they include.

1. Immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is one of the most effective proven treatments of ocular allergies. This treatment can be effective in the treatment of eye allergies and is a preventative for recurring allergies. Immunotherapy treatment comes in the form of shots and pills and is used to destroy allergens that set off allergy symptoms.

2. Artificial tears. Artificial tears help clean allergens from the eyes providing you with relief from ocular allergies. This treatment is easily accessible even without a prescription and is effective in dry eyes relief.

3. Antihistamine. This ocular allergy treatment is effective and can prevent eye allergies. Packed with antihistamine and a must cell-stabilizer, an antihistamine can provide significant relief to red eyes, burning and tearing.

4. Corticosteroids. Steroid eye drops are another effective treatment which can be prescribed along with other treatments. Eye steroids are effective in treating allergic effects like red eyes, irritation, and swelling.
