What is the Dell PowerEdge R520 2U?
The Dell PowerEdge R520 2U stands close to Dell’s flagship server, the R720, but is a more affordable alternative for those with less demanding processing requirements. Even tasks such as video streaming are handled with a breeze with the R520.
The 2U chassis has a full-length lockable lid on the top that opens up to an extremely well designed and loaded interior. There are six cooling fans that do not support hot swapping, as indicated by the blue colored marking on them. On the rear, you find two redundant power supplies that do support hot swap and are hence marked with orange. There is an option to go for 495 W, 500 W, 750 W and 1100 W along with a DC option if needed.
The server supports four, six and eight core implementations of the processor and you can custom build your refurbished server using any of Intel’s Xeon E5 2400 series CPU. The server contains 12 DIMM slots for DDR3 RAM supporting up to 384 GB of storage which is just about enough for memory hungry applications such as server virtualization.
There are four PCIe 3.0 slots available for plug-in cards, but you can’t plug GPU accelerator cards in these slots. There are eight 3.5” LFF hard disk drive bays that can accommodate SAS, SATA and SSD drives and offering up to 32 TB of internal storage.
Lastly, there is a slot on the server’s motherboard for an embedded hypervisor that shows as a dual SD card module. It gives redundancy in case one of the hypervisors fail.
Performance of the server mainly just depends on the CPU you build the refurbished server with. Although the R520 isn’t close to the R720 in terms of performance, it gives you enough horsepower to take up tasks from basic print sharing to cloud computing and moderate virtualization.
Management and Deployment
The server can conveniently be setup inside a server rack with its 2U chassis and the cable management kit that it comes with makes the job of an IT professional much easier by keeping things neat and tidy. Hot swap of hard disk drives and power supplies makes maintenance much easier as well.
The R520 comes with the iDRAC 7 Express that gives access to the Lifecycle controller for remote management and monitoring.
Should You Buy a Refurbished Server?
Here at KahnServers, we test and verify your refurbished server before shipping and each server from us comes with a one-year RTB warranty.
With new servers, the rate of depreciation is sometimes not worth the price tag and the room for scalability is also limited since one already spends thousands to deploy it. Refurbished servers are a better option due to the room for scalability since you can always upgrade components without them being too heavy on your pocket and also the rate of depreciation is relatively lower than that for new servers.
